What to expect during the switch
Switching to Virgin Media is simple and can take as little as two weeks to complete with our QuickStart self-installation option. You find out if this is available at checkout, with the alternative being that you can book one of our engineers to get your home connected.
We’ll confirm your Virgin Media installation date after you’ve placed your order. When you receive this, you’re ready to manage the cancellation with your current provider. Please get in touch and ask them to cancel your contract as close to your Virgin Media installation date as possible – we’ll then take care of the rest and finish the broadband switch for you.
FAQs
- Phone number – Please tell us that you’d like to keep your current home phone number when placing your broadband and phone order. We’ll contact your provider for you and try to arrange for your number to be switched to our network (you’ll still need to contact them to switch your broadband).
- Email address – If you have an email account with your current broadband provider, you may be able to keep it, perhaps for a cost or with more basic features. Please check the terms and conditions of your contract or contact your provider for advice before switching broadband.
All our broadband deals are available with no setup fee, but other one-off costs may still apply, such as the standard £35 service activation charge. See our price guide for the full breakdown of potential costs.
Don’t forget to get in touch with your current provider or check the terms of your contract to find out about any cancellation or exit fees they may charge. If you’ve completed your minimum contract – or if you were getting slower speeds than you were promised and you’ve had your line tested under the OFCOM Speed Code – you should be able to switch broadband without penalties.
This varies based on your broadband installation date (confirmed within 48 hours of your order). We can usually complete the switch within two weeks if you select the QuickStart self-installation method at checkout.
The kit can arrive with you in as little as 4 days, but delivery can sometimes take longer – if we need to close someone else’s account at the property, it can take up to two weeks to switch broadband to our network. An engineer visit may take longer but you’ll be offered the earliest possible appointments at checkout .
It’s a personal choice and we don’t mind when you cancel your current broadband as it won’t delay your Virgin Media installation. But if you’d like our advice, it’s better to order one of our broadband deals before you leave your current provider – whether you’re switching from BT to Virgin Media, switch from Sky to Virgin Media, or whatever network you’re currently with. This way, you can share our confirmed installation date with them and they can help you to avoid loss of service while switching your broadband.
All our broadband deals are currently available with no setup fee and you know what that means, you can pay £0 to get your new Virgin Media installed. Top tip – Check the plan details for other one-off costs that may still apply to your first bill, such as any service activation charges, so you know exactly what to expect after you switch broadband provider.
To help avoid loss of service and seamlessly switch your broadband, try to stay connected to your current provider right up until your installation date or consider having a short overlap between your old provider and Virgin Media.
If you time this process right, you shouldn’t lose internet access when you’re switching broadband provider – whether it’s a switch from Sky to Virgin Media, BT to Virgin Media, or whatever network you’re joining us from.

The legal stuff
*Monthly price of Virgin Media’s main services and O2 Airtime Plan will increase each April from April 2025 by the Retail Price Index rate of inflation announced in February each year plus 3.9%. Doesn’t apply to any add-ons you may have selected, out-of-bundle charges or admin costs, which may increase separately. See www.virginmedia.com/prices and www.o2.co.uk/prices for details.
No setup fee
This promotion means you won’t pay the usual setup fee of £35. No setup fee is available on all bundles, broadband & phone, and broadband only packages. If you can set up using a Self-Install pack, but choose to use an engineer for the installation, you’ll still be charged £30 for this service.
These prices are for new customers only.
Virgin Media services are only available in eligible Virgin Media network areas. Virgin TV 360 and, for the time being, home phone are not available in new network expansion areas.
All of the products on this page are subject to survey, network capacity and a credit check.
Each service has a minimum contract length that’s shown in your basket.
If you take a bundle with both Virgin Media and O2, you’ll have separate contracts and bills – one for Virgin Media, and another for O2.
- Offers are subject to eligibility and availability.
