Golf’s Open Championship, England v West Indies Test cricket, Formula One, rugby league and more, plus the return of the Scottish Premiership – it’s shaping up to be a fantastic summer on Sky Sports
By Chris Miller, Feature Writer
The big summer sporting events continue to come thick and fast. There’s always drama at the Open Championship, especially when the summer weather is treacherous, while the Evian Championship brings the top women’s players to France for a major event. It’s the start of the England men’s Test summer as they face the West Indies in three back-to-back matches, while the Hundred returns to add a burst of colourful excitement to the season.
There are two F1 Grands Prix at two classic circuits and plenty of rugby from both codes and both hemispheres, plus the World Matchplay Darts and some top-notch title fights. And then, of course, it’s the start of the new football season, as the top teams in the Scottish Premiership kick off 2024/25 at the start of August. Don’t miss a minute of this superb sporting action, live on Sky Sports this summer.
Remember, you can follow all the live action on Sky Sports wherever you are in the UK, as long as there’s WiFi, 3G or 4G, thanks to the Sky Sports app. Simply download the free app from the Apple app store for iPad or iPhone, or from Google Play. Here’s all the action you can enjoy live on Sky Sports in the coming month…
Golf
Two majors dominate the golf calendar this month. First up it’s the Evian Championship, live from the French Alps, a tournament that no player has managed to win twice since it joined the ranks of the majors in 2013. Could defending champ and home favourite Céline Boutier be the one to break that record? Other contenders will be Ko Jin-young of South Korea, England’s Charley Hull and, of course, world number one Nelly Korda of the US. She won the year’s first major, the Chevron Championship, but missed the cut at the next two so she’ll be determined to get back on track.
Then it’s off to Royal Troon for the 152nd staging of the Open Championship, and many golf fans will be hoping that after his horror show on the final few greens of the US Open, Rory McIlroy can put his troubles behind him and recapture his top form. There will of course be plenty of top-class opposition from the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and 2021 champ Collin Morikawa. But links golf can often throw up surprises, especially with the weather as unruly as it’s forecast to be this year.
There’s plenty more golf this month including the women’s Irish Open from Dromoland Castle, with extensive live coverage on Sky Sports Golf and Sky Sports Mix.

Cricket: Men’s Test Matches
The visit of the West Indies always brings excitement for those who remember the great sides of the 1970s and 1980s – and although those days of dominance are gone, the current team are still packed with enough talent to give England a serious test. Hugely experienced batter Kraigg Brathwaite leads the team, and Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph make up a formidable attack (although strike bowler Kemar Roach has been ruled out with a knee injury).
But there’s no doubt about the big story: the retirement of all-time great James Anderson, as the Lancashire seamer ends his career after the first Test at Lord’s. Expect heartfelt tributes, heroic montages, and almost certainly some wickets to add to the 700 he’s already bagged. There may even be tears, although probably not from the stoic Anderson himself. We love you, Jimmy.

Cricket: Women’s T20 Internationals
England dominated the one-day series between these teams earlier in the summer, chasing down every total New Zealand set them with time and wickets to spare for a 3-0 series victory. Sophie Ecclestone took seven wickets at an average of 7.5 while Lauren Bell and Charlie Dean contributed with the ball as well; batter Maia Bouchier averaged 93.
They’ll all be involved in the five-match T20 series as well, and captain Heather Knight will have her eye on another whitewash (and her other eye on the weather forecast, probably). Ahead of this autumn’s T20 World Cup, England are shaping up nicely – but New Zealand still have the potential to challenge them. Follow all the action on Sky Sports.

Cricket: The Hundred
Crack open the snacks and get ready to count the massive sixes, because the Hundred is back for 2024! There’s action pretty much every day from the opening games on 23 July all the way through to the final on 18 August, as the eight men’s and eight women’s teams do battle. Georgia Adams’s Southern Brave are the defending women’s champs while on the men’s side it was Oval Invincibles who took the title in 2023, with Jamie Overton playing a starring role. Look out for overseas stars such as Meg Lanning (London Spirit), Adam Zampa (Invincibles), Kieron Pollard (Brave), Marizanne Kapp (Invincibles) and Haris Rauf (Welsh Fire), as well as plenty of England players.

Cricket: T20 Blast
Just ahead of the Hundred, there’s time to fit in a few more T20 Blast matches. Lancashire surged to the top of the North Group with five wins in their first six games, only to be pegged back thanks to an abandoned game, a tight two-run defeat by Durham and a loss to arch-rivals Yorkshire. They’ll get the chance for revenge live on Sky Sports when they meet the Vikings at Old Trafford. In the South Group, Kent meet Glamorgan with both teams looking to improve on their early form and climb the table.

Football: Scottish Premiership
The 2024/25 Scottish football season gets going a week ahead of the English one – which means a massive weekend of Premiership action on Sky Sports. Hearts kick off at home to Rangers where a win would boost their chances of breaking into the top two after a third-place finish in 2023/24, while champions Celtic welcome Kilmarnock, who were fourth last term.
There’s a Dundee city derby – the first since 2022 – at Tannadice, and on Monday night the cameras are in Perth for St Johnstone’s clash with Aberdeen. Anything’s possible at this stage, so don’t miss a moment of these four huge matches.

Motorsport: Formula One
Last month we wrote: “Anyone who was expecting another Max Verstappen procession to the F1 drivers’ championship this year has been shaken out of their torpor by wins for Carlos Sainz (Australia), Lando Norris (Miami) and Charles Leclerc (Monaco)”. Well, Verstappen may have won in Spain, but the next two races stuck more thorns in his side – and they were British ones too. George Russell took the chequered flag in Austria before an emotional Lewis Hamilton took his ninth British Grand Prix victory at Silverstone.
Another British driver, Lando Norris, is second in the drivers’ championship ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. Verstappen has won the past two races at the Hungaroring, but he’ll be feeling the pressure this time around. Then it’s on to the venerable circuit at Spa-Francorchamps for the Belgian GP. You can see all the key moments with full live coverage on Sky Sports.

Motorsport
Besides Formula One, there’s plenty more motorsport on Sky Sports for fans of high-octane action. There are two IndyCar races over one weekend at the Iowa Speedway and then more thrilling action from the street circuit in Toronto. Spain’s Álex Palou, the defending champ, has returned to the top of the standings ahead of Will Power but this month could have a huge impact on the table. Back in Britain, there’s action from the Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex and GT Championship racing from the Snetterton circuit in Norfolk.

Darts: World Matchplay
Darting legend Phil “The Power” Taylor won the men’s World Matchplay a phenomenal 16 times between 1995 and 2017 – but since then it’s been very much up for grabs. Only Gary Anderson has reached the final twice, and there’s been a different champion every year. Nathan Aspinall is the defending champ, and he’ll headline the opening night as he takes on Luke Woodhouse, while world number one Luke Humphries is also in action on that Saturday against Ricardo “Pikachu” Pietreczko. There are 32 entrants and they’re all of the world’s best players – including, yes, Luke Littler, who’s been handed the tough task of facing three-time champ Michael van Gerwen in the first round.
The women’s tournament features the world’s top eight, with Katie Sheldon returning after missing out in 2023 and Anastasia Dobromyslova making her debut. The player to beat is Beau Greaves, the 20-year-old from Doncaster who exploded onto the scene and blew the opposition away last year, crushing the experienced Mikuru Suzuki 6-1 in the final.

Rugby League: Super League XXIX
It’s tight. Wigan have built a lead at the top of the Super League, but behind them are a clutch of teams within a few points of each other waiting to pounce if the Warriors slip up. Chief among those are St Helens, who visit Wigan’s Brick Community Stadium on 12 July for what promises to be an epic battle. But Warrington, Hull KR, Salford, Catalans and Leeds will all believe they can have a say in the destiny of the League Leaders’ Shield, not to mention the top two, who qualify directly for the semi-finals. Rugby League: Women’s Super League
Ahead of the men’s clash you can see Wigan’s women take on St Helens at the Brick, and just as in the men’s version, this is a meeting of the top two in the table – but the Saints have a game in hand over the Warriors, so grabbing an away win here will have a big impact. They’re both striving to stay ahead of 2023 champs York Valkyrie, who are sitting third and have already beaten St Helens once this season.

Rugby League: NRL Men’s
It’s Melbourne Storm leading the way in the NRL this season. They took over top spot from the Sharks in round 13 and they’ve been there ever since, reeling off win after win over mostly bottom-half teams without much trouble. This month, though, they face serious contenders in the form of the Roosters. Other challengers including the Sharks and Bulldogs are featured multiple times on Sky Sports this month, so don’t miss the gripping rugby league action.

Rugby League: State Of Origin
The longstanding annual contest between New South Wales and Queensland is finely poised going into the third men’s match. Queensland won 38-10 in Sydney, scoring six tries including a hat-trick for Hamiso “Hammer” Tabuai-Fidow, but the NSW Blues fought back in the second match (which took place on neutral ground in Melbourne), scoring seven tries in a 38-18 victory. Brisbane is the venue for the decider and the Maroons may be boosted by the success of their women’s team, who took their series 2-1.

Boxing
Reigning WBO middleweight champ Janibek Alimkhanuly took the IBF title from Vincenzo Gualtieri in his last fight, so there are two belts on the line when the Kazakh fighter faces Andreu Mikhailovich in Las Vegas. They’re both unbeaten so – excuse us for stating the obvious – something’s got to give. This month you can also see three title fights at one event in Tokyo, with Junto Nakatani’s WBC bantamweight bout with Vincent Astrolabio of the Philippines headlining the night (actually daytime here).
From Tokyo to Barnsley, as Zak Chelli and Callum Simpson face off for Chelli’s British and Commonwealth super middleweight titles at the town’s Oakwell stadium on 3 August. It’s Simpson who’s on home ground here – and has the unbeaten record too. We could be in for an epic battle.
